Choosing a School

Helpful things to consider:

1.  SCHOOL FEATURES
Review the school test scores and see where the students stack up against other area schools and if they are making progress.  What is the school’s attendance rate and graduation rate?  Does the school offer a longer school day/year?  Review what aspects are important to you and your child and ensure the school stacks up.

2. CULTURE
Are students engaged in their class work?  Do teachers hold extremely high-expectations for the students?  What is the school’s vision for its students?  Is student work posted and readily available for you?

3. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Are there opportunities for students to do internships and/or research?  Does the school provide opportunities for its students to engage in sports activities or in the arts?

4. PARENT INVOLVEMENT
How are parents involved in the school?  Is there a parent organization?  How does the school regularly communicate with its parents?

5. SAFETY
What are the standards for student behavior?  What security measures are taken during the school day and during after-school programs?  How are parents notified if there is a security issue with the school or students?
